Who said that the ultimate sunkissed summer look requires hours in the sun? The season of self-tanning is here — and if you're one of those people who doesn't want to risk wrinkles or burns for a bronze glow, self-tanning products promise a guilt-free result. But are they safe? Do they really work? And what should you look out for? We've researched, asked experts, and gathered everything you need to know before you apply your mousse or lotion.

What is self? tan and how does it work?;

The "magic" behind self tan lies in an active ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It is a plant-based substance, usually from sugar cane or sugar beets, which reacts with the amino acids of the outer layer of the skin, gradually creating a golden – or chocolate – tone.

The result is not immediate, but it starts to appear within 4 to 6 hours and looks better the next day. It has nothing to do with melanin production, i.e. the natural tanning from the sun. That is why, despite the bronze look, your skin remains just as sensitive to sunlight.

The formats available – and what to choose

The self-tanning market is hotter than ever. You can find everything from foams that dry instantly to lotions that give a gradual tan over a few days. There are also special sprays, mousses, wipes, bronzing waters and gels, as well as products that are applied in specialized beauty centers with an airbrush or spray booth.

If you are a beginner, start with one gradual tan moisturizer! It has a small amount of DHA and offers a subtle effect without worrying about mistakes. If you have experience, try a foam self tan with an application glove that dries quickly and spreads evenly. Sprays require care, while one-day bronzers give color that washes away in the shower, ideal for a momentary look.

Self tan and safety: Is it actually healthy?;

Artificial tanning is considered a safer alternative to the sun — and with good reason. DHA does not penetrate deeply into the skin and is not considered toxic. However, there are important notes which you should take into account:

  • Do not inhale the product.: Especially in spray form, DHA can irritate the respiratory tract or mucous membranes. Experts emphasize that it should not be used in nasal spray form or in “tanning shots” — substances that have not been approved and may cause serious side effects.
  • Does not offer sun protection: Self tan does not equal SPF. In fact, some studies show that DHA can make the skin more sensitive to free radicals when exposed to UV radiation for 24 hours. So, sunscreen always!
  • May cause sensitivity: If you have sensitive or atopic skin, do a patch test first. test patch on the inside of the arm. Some people experience itching, redness, or pimples.

Tips for a perfect, natural result

The secret to a successful self tan is not only the product, but also the preparation:

  • Peeling 1-2 days before, especially on dry areas like elbows and knees.
  • Hydration, but not immediately before application, ideally 6-8 hours in advance.
  • Application glove for uniform coverage and avoiding stains on the palms.
  • Waiting: Do not shower or wear tight clothing for 6–8 hours.
  • Maintenance with gentle cleansing, frequent moisturizing and renewal every 3-4 days.

If summer is synonymous with golden skin for you, self tan can become your most loyal ally. It offers the coveted sunkissed color without the harmful effects of the sun, and with a little care, it can look more natural than a sun tan itself. All you need to do is treat it with the respect that befits any serious skincare habit. Because after all, the most beautiful bronze is the one that does not threaten your health.
